Jet Skiing

Jet Ski is the brand name of Kawasaki's personal water craft, introduced in the 1960s. The name, however, is often used as a generic term for personal watercraft (PWC). A PWC is a recreational watercraft that a rider sits or stands on, rather than inside of.

A Jet Ski is part water skiing and part speedboat in its operation. Models have an inboard engine driving a pump jet which is used to pump water out as a jet stream, thus pushing the boat forwards. Jet Skis can also refer to versions of PWCs known as ‘stand-ups’. Most are designed for two or three people, though four-passenger models exist. Stand-up PWCs are also popular for single riders.

Jet Skis
use a hand operated throttle and are manoeuvred by a combination of turning the handlebars and the rider physically shifting their weight to either side of the craft. An accomplished Jet Ski rider can make very sharp turns, but this is a skill that often takes time to master, and involving lots of falling off. With this in mind, all Jet Skis are fitted with a dead man’s switch to immediately cut the engine.

Some surfers use PWCs to reach waves and get up to speed with them; this is known as tow-in surfing. They can also be used for towing water skiiers on flat water.

Early models of Jet Ski were powered by traditional two stroke engines, which generated high levels of pollution. This along with their noise and high speed has meant that many local authorities have regulated the use of Jet Skis on certain stretches of inland water and on certain coastal locations. There are also stringent health and safety rules regarding the wearing of floatation devices and helmets which must be adhered to. As with any watersport, tuition is essential.
