South West Map

The extreme South-West region (notably Cornwall), was one of the bastions of the Celts-Iron Age Britons driven west by the advancing legions of Rome, and, as such, has long been considered own native Celtic-Cornish language until only three or four hundred years ago, the South West is noted for being the legendary realm of King Arthur, the final resting place of the Holy Grail, the mythical abode of giants, mermaids and pixies, and the partly-real, partly-dream landscape of Thomas Hardy’s Wessex novels. South East Map
Being closest to the European mainland, the South-East of England has long been the gateway through which successive waves of settlers and invaders have entered the island.

The main upland areas of the region are the gently swelling chalk ridges of the North and South Downs, which stretch east from the Hampshire Downs to the Channel coast. Lying within this horseshoe of chalk, which terminates abruptly in the white cliffs of Dover in the north, and Beachy Head in the South, are the sands and clays of the Kent and Sussex Weald, outside it are the sands and clays of the Sussex Plain, the North Kent Plain and the London Basin. East Anglia Map
East Angliais dominated by water, distant horizons and open expanses of fluid sky. The landscape of eastern England is essentially level and low-lying with wilderness. Being low-lying, the east coast is one of the most threatened parts of the island. For centuries the inhabitants have fought a constant battle against storm, flood and tide.

Even today, with millions of pounds being spent on sea defences, erosion continues to eat away at the vulnerable coastline. At western and southern parts of the region the land is higher and comparatively drier. The University of Cambridge, formerly a busy inland port, lies in the shadow of the gentle chalk slopes of the Gog Magog Hills. (read more)

Heading northward from the Irish Sea port of Liverpool and the industrial City of Manchester, the landscape of North-West England becomes progressively more wild and less populated as it approaches Carlisle and the Scottish Border. Beyond the coal tips and mill towns of South Lancashire lie open moorland and coastal marshland, the latter interspersed with such major holiday resorts as Southport, Blackpool and Morecambe.

To the east, and running the entire length of the North West Region, are the Pennines, the so called backbone of England while in the extreme north lies the gently swelling valley of the River Eden and the low Whaleback hills of the Solway Plain. North East Map
North-East Region of England in particular the upland area bordering Scotland, wild, lawless and ungovernable land until only a few hundred years ago. There are 3 National Parks in this region, the North Yorkshire Moors, the Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland, all with strikingly different scenery.

The region embraces limestone pavements, heather moorlands, upland pastures, meadow rich dales, foaming waterfalls, dramatic ravines, high cliffs and mile after mile of sandy beaches. Remarkably, beyond the heavily populated areas of industrial and urban development, the north east remains an untamed land of wild, wide open spaces. (read more)

Scotland Map
Scotland is one of the least densely populated countries in Europe. Not much smaller then its southern neighbour, England, Scotland has only a tenth of its population and most of these are crammed into the narrow central belt, leaving two-thirds of the Scotland virtually empty. The Highlands of Scotland represents the very essence of people’s perception of Scotland, renowned worldwide for its magnificent scenery, traditional culture and the warmth of its hospitality.

The Highlands is an area of contrasts, from Inverness, its fast growing capital, to more remote rural communities where the pace of life remains virtually unchanged. About the only thing Scotland doesn’t have going for it is a dependable climate. If you want to lie on the beach all day, then you ought to try somewhere else. (read more)
