Tim Henman, Greg Rusedski and Andy Murray have given British Tennis a tremendous competitive lift over the last ten years, increasing the grass roots popularity of the game. Not since Fred Perry in the 1930s has British Tennis had players who have been consistently seeded in the world men’s top 10.
At the professional level, a very popular spectator sport and the financial rewards for the winners are very high. The Women’s game today is dominated by the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, whilst the men’s game is going through a transition following the long reign of Pete Sampras.
The ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) and WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) for men and women respectively publish world player rankings and present a series of tournaments in which the player’s cumulative performance determines their annual ranking.
The Davis Cup for men and the Federation Cup for women are the major international tournaments contested at the country level. |
