The major automobile sports of Formula 1 and Rallying are covered under this heading.

Equipment
The automobiles and motorcycles used in motor sports are custom-designed to be the fastest and most reliable within the rules specified for each competition.

Specific equipment used in either automobile or motorcycling racing is indicated under the following individual motor sport sections.

History
The beginning of motor sports was heralded by the invention of the 4-stroke engine by German engineer Nikalus Otta in the early 1870s and the building of the first production line car by another German, Karl Benz. Over the next few years, manufacturers began informally competing against each other in attempts to break speed or distance records. Then, in 1904, the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) was founded.
