The real name for a zoo is a "zoological garden" but this has been shortened to "zoo" over time. The first scientific zoo in the modern world was founded in London in 1828. It was opened to the public in the same year, as a way of funding its scientific work.
The modern zoo has changed to reflect a new role which has developed dramatically over the years. It is now a complex operation with specialists in many different disciplines including animal husbandry, health, nutrition, behaviour and records keeping.
By paying to visit a modern zoo, you make a direct contribution to field activities and to maintaining threatened species in the zoo. Through your entry fee you also help provide training and technical assistance to other conservation groups and individuals in many countries around the world, including here in the UK.
