Absailing is an adventure sport descending a steep face by means of a double rope fixed above the climber. Absailing from overhanging cliff faces is a safe and very exciting outdoor adventure providing breathtaking views and a fascinating experience. In the last twenty years, absailing has become a tourist activity, mainly because no specific level of fitness or previous experience is required. Basics? The principle of absailing is to descend on the rope controlling friction in one of four ways;
1) Use only the rope wearing leather gloves and a shoulder cloth to avoid skin burns.
2) Using a doubly looped tape sling around the waist, with one part brought up between the legs from back to front and connected to the other part using carabines. The rope is then run through the carabines and over the shoulder.
3) Using various types of descenders.
4) Using a belay plate. |
